Our brains experience 5 frequencies – Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta and Gamma. Of these, Theta is the most conducive to mind body and spirit, or whole being, healing. Our speech and activities are all regulated by our brainwave frequencies. In theory, Theta brainwaves range between 4 and 8 Hz as patterns of electrical activity. We experience Theta brainwaves when we are deeply relaxed, in a meditative state, and during hypnosis.

There are many benefits to being in a Theta state:

· Greater resilience

· Increased stamina

· More restful sleep

· Reduced stress levels

· Minimized anxiety levels

· Greater sense of balance

· Faster recovery after illness

· Improved creativity and intuition

· Enhanced focus, concentration and memory

· A more peaceful state of mind (less “monkey mind”)

Intentionally cultivating a Theta brainwave state allows us to access the wisdom of our subconscious and the part of our psyche usually not accessible when we are in the more alert Alpha state.

Finally, the Theta brainwave stimulates the production of GABA, a neurotransmitter which generates deep calm. Theta brainwaves are also an effective remedy for the symptoms of adrenaline excess, feeling “wired” and acute stress responses.

How to Enter a Theta Brainwave State

· Meditate on a regular basis

· Take gentle walks in nature

· Listen to soothing music you enjoy

· Practice gentle yoga postures, Tai Chi or Qigong

· Listen to Theta recordings (there is a large selection on YouTube. Here is one example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcU6w1Pr5gc)

· Engage in creative activities like gardening, painting, playing a musical instrument for pleasure

· Practice Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4/7/8 Breathing Exercise. https://www.drweil.com/videos-features/videos/breathing-exercises-4-7-8-breath/
